The 20-Second Habit That Keeps Washer Gasket Mold Away

By Vent Pro NYC · · 3 min read

Every gasket cleaning we do ends the same way: we show the customer a routine that takes about twenty seconds and costs nothing. Do it, and the mold that took months to build has nowhere to start over.

After the last load of the day

The detergent part nobody mentions

Leftover detergent and fabric softener aren’t just residue — they’re food. Use high-efficiency (HE) detergent in a front-loader, measure instead of pouring by feel, and treat fabric softener as an occasional guest rather than a roommate. Less leftover product in the folds means less for mold to live on.

Once a month or so

Run the machine’s hottest tub-clean cycle empty — with a washer-cleaning tablet if you have one. It flushes the tub and plumbing so residue never accumulates into a colony’s food supply. It won’t clean mold that’s already in the folds (here’s why), but it’s excellent prevention once they’re clean.

If it comes back anyway

Catch it early: one or two fresh spots wipe away in a minute with soapy water. If it keeps returning despite the routine, the colony survived deeper in the folds than a rag can reach — that’s the point where a deeper clean is due.
