Electrolux & Frigidaire Washers: Why Steam Doesn't Clean the Gasket

Electrolux owners tend to be surprised by gasket mold, and we understand why. These are machines sold on steam: steam wash options, sanitize cycles, allergen settings. Frigidaire, which Electrolux owns, sells a plainer version of the same front-loader, often as a stacked laundry center in a closet. If the washer can steam a shirt, the thinking goes, surely the door seal is being steamed clean every week. It isn’t, and the reason is the same reason a self-clean cycle doesn’t fix it either.
Where the steam goes
A steam cycle raises the temperature and humidity inside the drum, which is good for loosening stains on the laundry and for the drum itself. But the mold that makes towels smell musty doesn’t live in the drum. It lives in the fold under the gasket lip, in a channel that stays wet and cool at the bottom of the door, packed with lint and detergent residue. Steam moves through the drum and out the vent path; it does not flush that channel, and a warm, damp cycle followed by a closed door leaves the fold wetter than it started. A steam washer that never gets its seal wiped grows gasket mold exactly like one without steam. The mechanism is the same on every front-loader.
The detergent trap
Electrolux and Frigidaire front-loaders are high-efficiency, low-water machines, and several Electrolux models add a dispenser that pre-mixes detergent with water before it reaches the drum. That is good engineering for the wash. It also means the machine does not need much detergent, and it is easy to give it too much, especially with pods, which deliver one fixed dose whether the load is a full drum or three shirts. Extra detergent in low water ends the cycle as residue, and residue in the gasket fold is what mold eats. If the seal feels slick or the drum smells sweet rather than clean, the dose is too high.
- Use HE detergent only, and start at half the amount on the label. Adjust up only if clothes come out dirty.
- Skip fabric softener in the machine. It coats the rubber and holds residue in the fold. Dryer sheets or wool balls do the same job with no effect on the seal.
- Run the system-clean or drum-clean cycle when the machine asks, with the door left open afterward. It helps the drum and the plumbing; the gasket still needs a hand.
Laundry centers and stacked pairs
Frigidaire laundry centers and stacked Electrolux pairs usually live in a closet, which adds the same problem the compact machines have: still, humid air around a wet seal. Leave the closet open with the washer door after the last load, and fold the gasket lip back on the drain side once a week to look. That 10-second check is the whole early-warning system.
What actually fixes it
